Rivers affect the biovolume and functional traits of phytoplankton in floodplain lakes

Abstract: Aim:We analyzed the temporal distribution (dry and rainy periods) of phytoplankton functional groups (biovolume) from lakes connected to dammed (S1 -Paraná River) and non-dammed rivers (S2 -Baia River and S3 -Ivinhema River) in the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. We also determined the drivers of the phytoplankton community assemblage. Methods: Phytoplankton and environmental variables samplings were performed quarterly in dry (2000 and 2001) and rainy (2010 and 2011) periods. We classified the phytopl… Show more

“…Regarding research on phytoplankton, studies began in 1993 with Train (1998) reporting temporal changes in the structure of this community. Nevertheless, from 2009 is when the largest number of studies were recorded in the region and the most diverse ecological theories were explored (Rodrigues et al, 2009;Bortolini et al, 2017;Pineda et al, 2017;Zanco et al, 2017).…”

“…PAR attenuation coefficients ( k ), and Z eu can be accurately calculated from vertical profiles of underwater PAR irradiance by using underwater quantum sensors (Liu et al, ; Padial & Thomaz, ). In addition, SD is widely used to estimate k and Z eu due to the ease of its measurement (Cardoso et al, ; Pineda et al, ; Zanco, Pineda, Bortolini, Jati, & Rodrigues, ). The significant correlations between SD and k , and between SD and Z eu , allow for the use of regression models (Padial & Thomaz, ; Zhang, Liu, Yin, Wang, & Qin, ) and indices, which emerge from the product k × SD and the ratio Z eu /SD (Koenings & Edmundson, ).…”

“…Although it has long been known that the balance between scattering and absorption of PAR influences the relations between SD and k , and between SD and Z eu (Effler, ), SD is widely applied to evaluate light climate variability in river‐floodplain systems without validating if the relations are constant in space and time (Cardoso et al, ; Mayora et al, ; Pineda et al, ; Zanco et al, ). As a result, this research aims to evaluate the main components driving the variability in light climate in a turbid river‐floodplain system and the feasibility of evaluating it from SD.…”
