Robot-assisted endoscopic surgery for thyroid cancer: experience with the first 100 patients

Abstract: The technique of robot-assisted endoscopic thyroid surgery using a gasless transaxillary approach is a feasible, safe, and effective method for selected patients with thyroid cancer. The authors suggest that application of robotic technology for endoscopic thyroid surgeries could overcome the limitations of conventional endoscopic surgeries in the surgical management of thyroid cancer.

“…The use of robot techniques is new in the field of thyroid surgery. The few studies that have examined robotic thyroidectomy have involved only a small number of patients in a single center [9,[11][12][13][14][15]. Although other reports have demonstrated the safety and feasibility of robotic thyroidectomy, the present work is the first multicenter study to investigate this approach specifically for thyroid carcinoma treatment.…”

“…A 3-dimensional stable and magnified image, instruments with seven degrees of freedom, gasless technique… are some of the crucial advantages of the addition of robot to surgery, especially thyroid and neck surgery, interventions with small working space. In fact, in 2009, the team of Professor Chung introduced the transaxillary robotic thyroidectomy (19).…”
