Robot assisted surgery in gynaecologic oncology – starting a program and initial learning curve from a UK tertiary referral centre: the Guildford perspective

Abstract: These data suggest that robotic assisted surgery is well suited to treating women with principally endometrial and cervical cancers and selected cases of ovarian cancer, enabling surgical staging to be completed with many more patients benefitting from a minimal access surgery approach. Thorough preparation, appropriate case selection and preceptorship in robotic surgery is essential to minimize the associated risks associated with adopting new surgical techniques.

“…Moreover, only very limited data are available on the long-term oncological outcomes and complications in patients treated with RRH for cervical cancer. 9 Because most previous studies evaluating the learning curve of RRH for early-stage cervical cancer have focused on short-term outcomes, such as operative time, complications, and conversion rate, 10,11 very little is known about the long-term oncological outcomes of RRH during the initial learning period.…”

“…A period of surgical mentorship by an experienced surgeon/proctor is also needed during the learning curve. 31 The Society of European Robotic Gynaecological Surgery has outlined a pilot curriculum in RS training targeting GO trainees in the first instance. This pilot began in July 2015 and will be evaluated to develop a formal broad-based program for RS training (personal communication).…”
