Robot-Assisted Transplant Surgery - Vision or Reality A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Minimally invasive surgery is standard procedure for many operations. Further refinements include the introduction of robotic surgery which is still an emerging field especially in laparoscopic surgery. Since the successful introduction of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, the robotic approach in organ transplantation has become of great interest in both the live donor organ retrieval and the recipient operation. Robotic surgery for kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantation is feasible. Over 700 donor ne… Show more

“…With a proficiency of over 70 robotic hepatectomy for various indications, Giulianotti et al [ 29 ] from Chicago successfully performed the first right lobe RDH. Several other units, including those from Taiwan and Saudi Arabia have successfully replicated the results and safety of RDH since that first report[ 6 , 14 - 16 , 21 , 27 , 28 , 30 ].…”

“…These systems are now gaining traction and are replacing the conventional laparoscopic operation. However, many questions especially with regards to standardization of surgical technique, comparison of outcomes, understanding of the learning curve, etc., remain unanswered[ 6 , 11 - 14 ]. The aim of this review is to provide insights into the evolution of MIDH and highlight the current status of robotic DH (RDH), appreciating the existing challenges and its future role.…”

“…PTx is the main method to restore physiological glycaemic control and prevent the progression of complications in diabetic patients [ 75 ]. Incredible progress has been made in this field in the last decades; for example, one-year graft survival rates increased from 20% in the early 80s to more than 80% nowadays [ 84 ].…”
