Robotic vs laparoscopic right colectomy – the burden of age and comorbidity in perioperative outcomes: An observational study

Abstract: BACKGROUND Several studies have shown the safety, feasibility and oncologic adequacy of robotic right hemicolectomy (RRH). Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (LRH) is considered technically challenging. Robotic surgery has been introduced to overcome this technical limitation, but it is related to high costs. To maximize the benefits of such surgery, only selected patients are candidates for this technique. In addition, due to progressive aging of the population, an increasing number of minimally in… Show more

“…However, SPR uses three robotic multi‐joint endowrist instruments, which can perform the role of an assistant efficiently. Previous papers comparing robotic and laparoscopic multi‐port right colectomy reported a faster bowel movement return in robotic surgery 23,24 . In a multivariable analysis conducted by Tagliabue et al., using the robotic technique was predictive of the faster restoration of bowel function 23 .…”

“…In both surgical methods, the median number of lymph nodes was more than 20, and there were no cases of lymph node resection with fewer than 12. In some studies, 24,25 more lymph nodes were collected from robotic surgery, but other studies 23,26,27 did not show differences between the two groups. The present study also did not show a significant difference.…”
