This paper studies the feasibility of calibrating a vector network analyzer with an arbitrary device serving as a calibration standard. The short-open-load-reciprocal and thruattenuator-network (TAN) procedures are, respectively, extended to develop short-open-load-device and thru-attenuator-device algorithms. The developed algorithms eliminate the limitations and broaden the applicable range of the thru-open-load-reciprocal and TAN procedures by using the device under test as a transfer standard. To benchmark the developed algorithms against the thru-reflect-line algorithm, experiments are conducted with a nonreciprocal device having theoretically symmetrical reflections. Results of the experiments verify the applicability of the developed algorithms.

The error theory of linear equation system has been applied to the calibration procedure of microwave network analyser in this article. A new explanation for the choice of the linear calibration equations is proposed and a general principle for choosing calibration equations is presented. The method can also be used to predict the occurrence of the problem of frequency limitation at some periodic frequencies. This principle is employed to the thru-short-delay (TSD) method and the solution using the chosen equations gives the most accurate results. A good agreement between the theory and the experiment has been obtained.

We describe the development of a novel instrument intended for the measurement of the acoustical reflection coefficient of materials. The instrument effectively implements a one-port vector-corrected network analyzer in the acoustic, rather than the electromagnetic, domain. Employing the welldocumented methods of error correction familiar to microwave engineers, this instrument permits automated measurement of an acoustic impedance presented to a waveguide port. A dualdirectional coupler allows a working frequency range of well over an octave. In principle, a set of six couplers would allow measurement from 100 to 50 000 Hz.
