Role of individual structural features of rabbit kidneys in the predisposition to gentamicin nephrotoxicity

Abstract: A relationship between congenital features in the structure of rabbit kidneys and sensitivity to gentamicin nephrotoxicity was revealed. Gentamicin nephrotoxicity is more pronounced in rabbits with lower diameter of nephron convoluted tubules and with smaller cells lining their lumen.

“…However, their clinical use is limited by their side effects, and especially their high nephrotoxicity by reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress (1). Gentamicin nephrotoxicity has been reproduced in various experimental animal models (mice, rat and rabbit) (13)(14)(15), and numerous agents (1,16,17) have been studied in order to investigate their ability to reduce this nephrotoxicity. As reported by Badreldin HA et al, medicinal plants extracts, compounds from aged garlic, withania somnifera, sesame oil (sesamum indicum, antioxidant vitamins C and E), nitric oxide, and dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are some of the agents that have been studied (18).…”

“…It has been estimated that up to 30% of patients treated with GM for more than 7 days show some signs of renal impairment [3]. GM nephrotoxicity has been investigated in several experimental models in rabbits, mice and rats [4–6], and several strategies and agents have been used, with various degrees of success, in an attempt to protect or reverse renal GM damage [3,7,8]. This would be expected to have important clinical implications in increasing the safety of the drug.…”
