Role of leptin and adiponectin in gestational diabetes mellitus: a study in a North Indian tertiary care hospital

Abstract: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) exposes women to a higher risk for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in later years of life. Newborns of mothers with GDM are at increased risk for acute perinatal complications including hypoglycaemia, jaundice and being large for gestational age. One of the mechanisms underlying glucose metabolism in pregnancy are a group of substances, which includes leptin and adiponectin, produced mainly in the adipose tissue; in this paper we analyze the role of these mediators i… Show more

“…In our study, the levels of serum adiponectin were obviously lower in GDM subjects than healthy pregnant women and related adversely to blood glucose level. Saini et al [ 21 ] showed that adiponectin concentration was lower in pregnant women with GDM and found an inverse relationship between adiponectin level and fasting blood sugar. Also, we examined the effects of adiponectin concentration and Pre-pregnancy BMI and found that the risk of GDM was an independent factor of BMI.…”

“…studied 30 GDM and 60 euglycemic pregnant women at 28 weeks of gestation and found significantly lower serum adiponectin levels in GDM. [5] We did not find any study from our country which has studied first trimester adiponectin levels.…”

“…[3] Also, while there are a few studies from India which have reported lower adiponectin levels in diagnosed GDM women, there is none that has evaluated first trimester adiponectin levels as a biomarker to predict GDM. [45] This study attempts to assess the prediction of GDM by the first trimester serum adiponectin levels in a population of Indian women living in Delhi and adjoining areas.…”

“…[141516] A study from India has also shown lower adiponectin concentrations in women with gestational diabetes mellitus, compared to those having a normal pregnancy. [17] Previous studies have reported negative correlation between adiponectin level and BMI in both GDM and normoglycemic pregnant women. [101819] In our study, similar correlation could not be seen between the two groups possibly due to small sample size.…”
