Role of noncoding RNA in vascular remodelling

Abstract: Purpose of review: Non-coding RNA (ncRNAs), such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs), are becoming fundamentally important in the pathophysiology relating to injury-induced vascular remodelling. We highlight recent studies that demonstrate the involvement of ncRNAs in vein graft disease, in in-stent restenosis (ISR) and in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with a particular focus on endothelial cell (EC) and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) function. We also briefly discuss the emer… Show more

“…It has been shown that aberrant lncRNAs expression can result in dysregulation of downstream effector molecules and consequently lead to the pathogenesis of CVD. Recent studies also showed that lncRNAs were pivotal regulators of VSMCs and ECs proliferation, migration, and cell motility . As atherosclerosis is mostly characterized by vascular dysfunction, it is plausible that lncRNAs are potential regulators of atherogenesis.…”

“…Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, small nuclear RNAs, small nucleolar RNAs, P-element induced wimpy testis interacting RNAs, microRNAs, and long ncRNAs, do not encode proteins. Some ncRNAs play critical regulatory roles in vascular physiology (3)(4)(5). Among them, circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been studied more intensively in recent years.…”
