Room Temperature Magnetic Quantum Cellular Automata

Abstract: All computers process information electronically. A processing method based on magnetism is reported here, in which networks of interacting submicrometer magnetic dots are used to perform logic operations and propagate information at room temperature. The logic states are signaled by the magnetization direction of the single-domain magnetic dots; the dots couple to their nearest neighbors through magnetostatic interactions. Magnetic solitons carry information through the networks, and an applied oscillating ma… Show more

“…Advances in lithography allow great flexibility in the design of ferromagnetic island arrays, and such arrays have the added advantage of being accessible at room temperature. Studies of lines and rectangular arrays of such ferromagnetic islands show that pairwise dipolar interactions between them can be significant [14][15][16][17][18][19] . These results suggest that frustration effects should be important if a lattice of such islands can be fabricated with a frustrated geometry.…”

“…Other computation schemes, operating on different principles, include electrons confined in quantum dot cellular automatons [158,159], magnetic dot cellular automatons [160], and solutions of interacting DNA molecules [161,162]. Computation can also be performed by purely mechanical means [163,164], as in the calculating engine of Babbage [165].…”

“…Fabrication variations can make this process more difficult -which can in turn lead to faulty behavior and undesirable logical states. We leverage micromagnetic simulations of supermalloy nanomagnets (the material used in [2]) performed with the OOMMF simulation suite [7] to study these issues. As in [6], we assumed a saturation magnetization of 8.0 × 10 5 A/m, an exchange stiffness constant of 1.05 × 10 −11 J/m, an anisotropy constant K 1 of 3 J/m 3 , and the default damping constant of 0.5.…”
