Rose Germplasm Analysis with RAPD Markers

Abstract: The genus Rosa consists of more than 100 species classified into four subgenera, Eurosa, Platyrhodon, Hesperhodos, and Hulthemia, and distributed widely throughout the northern hemisphere. The subgenus Eurosa includes 11 sections. The other subgenera are monotypic. One hundred and nineteen accessions and 213 markers of 36 rose species that inc… Show more

“…Pimpinellifoliae , this places R. persica and R. roxburghii within the subgenus Rosa , dismissing their subgeneric status. The incorporation of both subgenera in subgenus Rosa is in line with previous results on RAPDs (Jan et al, 1999; but only R. roxburghii was included), and on matK (Matsumoto et al, 1998), ITS (Wu et al, 2001b; Wissemann and Ritz, 2005), atpB‐rbcL intergenic spacer (Wissemann and Ritz, 2005; but only for R. roxburghii ), and trnL ‐ F / psbA ‐ trnH spacer sequences (Bruneau et al, 2007). The close relationship of R. persica with sect.…”

“…2 and 3). This position within Cinnamomeae is supported by RAPD data (Jan et al, 1999), AFLP and morphology data (Joly and Bruneau, 2007), and sequence data on ITS (Wissemann and Ritz, 2005), atpB‐rbcL (Wissemann and Ritz, 2005), GAPDH Joly et al, 2006), and trnL‐F / psbA‐trnH (Bruneau et al, 2007). Therefore, our results corroborate the conclusion of these authors that sect.…”

“…Within the rootstocks, the distance between varieties originating from different species is relatively high and varieties within a species are well clustered, although these clusters do contain some varieties belonging to different species. Distinct clustering of accessions belonging to one Rosa species was also observed with RAPD markers (Debener et al 1996;Millan et al 1996;Reynders-Aloisi and Bollereau 1996;Jan et al 1999;Martin et al 2001). The molecular differentiation contrasts to the fact that it is difficult to distinguish all those varieties using morphological measurements.…”
