The domain of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) had received a lot of attention recently due to its significant advanced capabilities in the ocean surveillance, marine monitoring and application deployment for detecting underwater targets. However, the literature have not compiled the state-of-the-art along its direction to discover the recent advancements which were fuelled by the underwater sensor technologies. Hence, this paper offers the newest analysis on the available evidences by reviewing studies in the past five years on various aspects that support network activities and applications in UWSN environments. This work was motivated by the need for robust and flexible solutions that can satisfy the requirements for the rapid development of the underwater wireless sensor networks. This paper identifies the key requirements for achieving essential services as well as common platforms for UWSN. It also contributes a taxonomy of the critical elements in UWSNs by devising a classification on architectural elements, communications, routing protocol and standards, security, and applications of UWSNs. Finally, the major challenges that remain open are presented as a guide for future research directions.

With the advances in technology, there has been an increasing interest from researchers and industrial institutions in the use of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Constrained by the open acoustic channel, harsh underwater environment, and their own particularities, UWSNs are vulnerable to a wide class of security threats and malicious attacks. However, most existing research into UWSNs has not taken security into consideration. Moreover, the existing relatively mature security mechanisms for WSNs cannot be directly utilized in UWSNs. For these reasons, this article aims to present a comprehensive overview of the particularities, constraints, attacks, challenges and current security mechanisms of UWSNs. In addition, challenging, open and hot research topics are outlined.

Secure and anonymous routing is required in many underwater acoustic network applications such as marine military. However, the characteristics of underwater acoustic networks cause existing secure scheme designed for traditional terrestrial networks to be inapplicable. This article presents a secure routing design for underwater acoustic networks. First, considering the difficulty of setting a trusted third party in underwater acoustic networks, a short signature algorithm without any online trusted third party is proposed and is used in the procedure of route setup for authentication between source and destination node pair. Analysis shows that the proposed signature scheme can resist forgery attacks effectively and improve communication security and signature efficiency. Second, a trap-door scheme in routing messages based on bilinear map is presented, which achieves anonymity of communication nodes to forwarding nodes. Finally, the anonymity of intermediate nodes in the routing path is also realized by encoding their session ID. Simulation results show the secure routing scheme has moderate network performance under the premise of secure communication.
