Running from stress: a perspective on the potential benefits of exercise-induced small extracellular vesicles for individuals with major depressive disorder

Abstract: Aerobic exercise promotes beneficial effects in the brain including increased synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis and regulates neuroinflammation and stress response via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Exercise can have therapeutic effects for numerous brain-related pathologies, including major depressive disorder (MDD). Beneficial effects of aerobic exercise are thought to be mediated through the release of “exerkines” including metabolites, proteins, nucleic acids, and hormones that communicate bet… Show more

“…In addition, higher PA levels elevate serotonin and norepinephrine concentrations (36), and enhance the release of neurotrophin (31). These bioactive molecules can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), enhance brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling, and positively contribute to mental health (37)(38)(39)(40).…”

“…Physical activity (PA), an important tool, has been widely shown to induce positive cardiovascular adaptations in patients to improve QOL and MH 8 . Relative to other interventions, PA is superior for improving physiological and psychological health because regular movement of skeletal muscles mediates metabolic elevations and the release of chemicals in the brain related to mood 9 , 10 . Currently, PA is an important non-pharmacological therapy for the treatment of CVDs and has been recognized in major guidelines worldwide 8 , 11 .…”
