We review the current status of theories and experiments aiming at an understanding and a determination of the properties of light vector and scalar mesons inside strongly interacting hadronic matter. Starting from a discussion of the relevant symmetries of QCD and their connection with the hadronic description through QCD sum rules we then discuss hadronic models used to calculate the in-medium self-energies of hadrons and their spectral functions. The difficulties to link these calculated properties to actual observables are emphasized. Finally, we review in detail all the running experiments searching for in-medium changes of vector and scalar mesons, both with relativistic heavy-ion reactions as well as with elementary reactions on (cold) nuclei. Inconsistencies among experimental results are discussed. While almost all experiments observe a considerable broadening of vector mesons inside the nuclear medium, no evidence for mass changes is observed in the majority of the experiments.

Recently the NA60 collaboration has reported the transverse mass spectra of dimuons coming from In-In collisions at 158 GeV/A. The measured yields display a strong invariant mass dependence not typical of radial flow, suggesting that different sources contribute in different mass regions. We interpret the dimuon transverse mass spectra from an early thermalized partonic phase and hadronic phase constrained by the strictures of broken chiral symmetry. Each phase develops a specific transverse momentum dependence by hydrodynamical expansion. We show that a measurement of the momentum anisotropy at NA60 could provide information on the dominant emission source (hadronic or partonic) in the intermediate mass region 1.5 ≤ M ≤ 3.0 GeV.

We present a theoretical analysis of inclusive photoproduction of φ mesons in nuclei. In particular the dependence of the total φ meson yield on the target mass number is investigated. The calculations are done using the semi-classical BUU transport approach that combines the initial state interaction of the incoming photon with the coupled-channel dynamics of the final state particles. The conditions of the calculations are chosen such as to match the set-up of a recent experiment performed at SPring8/Osaka. Whereas the observables prove to be rather sensitive to the φ self energy in the medium, the attribution of deviations from the standard scenario to a particular in-medium effect seems to be impossible.  2005 Elsevier B.V. In particular the theoretical and experimental determination of the vector and isoscalar spectral densities in systems with either finite temperature or baryon density has attracted much attention [1]. In particular the φ meson provides a well suited probe as it is a very sharp resonance in vacuum. One could thus expect to observe even smallest deviations of its spectral distribution in the nuclear medium from its properties in vacuum. Numerous authors have studied the medium modifications of the φ properties in different approaches as effective Lagrangians and QCD sum rules [2-6].
