Burial in cemeteries created by and on the orders of Cheikh Amadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride Sufi order in Senegal, is said to guarantee passage to paradise. While many Mourides, understandably, prefer to have their corpses transported for burial in these cemeteries, others opt to be interred elsewhere. Focusing on the commune of Joal-Fadiouth in Senegal, I argue that the choices of Mourides concerning place of burial are influenced by histories of migration in the commune and the processes through which people develop ties to the area. In explaining Mourides’ divergent preferences, the paper sheds light on broader questions of identity and rootedness, evolving conceptions of “place of origin” – as well as illuminating interactions between the religious and non-religious spheres in the lives of many Africans. I draw mainly on ethnographic research in the Thies and Diourbel Regions of Senegal.

Prispevek z metodama pozornega branja in intertekstualne primerjave med različnimi kulturami in religijami odkriva posebnosti judovskih žalostink za umrlimi in judovskih žalnih obredov, kot so izpričani v žalostinkah Svetega pisma in v posvetopisemskih judovskih virih, na antičnih judovskih nagrobnih napisih, v tradicionalnih judovskih verskih praksah žalovanja, v srednjeveških judovskih literarnih tradicijah spomina na mučence in v komemoracijah za žrtvami holokavsta v moderni judovski poeziji. Raziskuje tudi odnos do trpljenja in smrti Judov, izpričan v slovenskem ljudskem izročilu in v izbranih delih slovenske rokopisne tradicije. Ključne besede: trpljenje, smrt, žalovanje, tolažba, svetopisemske žalostinke, antični judovski nagrobni napisi, obred žalovanja This contribution discloses, by using the methods of close reading and intertextual comparison with various cultures and religions, peculiarities of Jewish laments in honour of the dead and of Jewish mourning rituals, as they are witnessed in laments of the Bible and in post-Biblical Jewish sources, in ancient Jewish epitaphs, in Jewish traditional religious mourning practices, in medieval Jewish literary traditions of commemorating martyrs and in commemorations of holocaust victims in modern Jewish poetry. It deals also with the relationship to suffering and the death of Jews, as they are witnessed in Slovenian literary folklore and in selected works of Slovenian manuscript tradition.UVOD V antiki, prek celotnega srednjega veka pa vse do moderne dobe so Judje svoje doživljanje trpljenja in smrti poetizirali v individualnih ali skupinskih delih. V vseh obdobjih judovske zgodovine od antike do danes so se razvijale različne oblike žalostink (angl. laments, lamentations, nem. Klagelieder), ki so jih avtorji sestavljali v različnih pesniških oblikah. Klasični biblični primeri žalostink so »Davidova žalostinka za Savlom in Jonatanom« (2 Sam 1,19-27), knjiga Žalostink, ki je sestavljena iz petih med seboj povezanih žalostink, Jobova knjiga ter nekateri psalmi iz vrste »žalostink« (Ps 6, 22, 38, 69, 88, 102). Biblični primeri judovskega odgovora na osebne in zgodovinske katastrofe sestavljajo vzorce, ki so jih Judje lahko aktualizirali skozi vsa obdobja, vse do izbruha nacističnega preganjanja in izkušnje katastrofe holokavsta. To zadnje obdobje je zahtevalo največ žrtev v slovanski srednji Evropi, zato je s tega prostora tudi največ pesnikov, ki so z močjo umetniške besede celotni trpeči judovski skupnosti izpovedovali, kar so sami doživljali. V novih okoliščinah so pesniki za sestavljanje žalostink iskali nove oblike.Članek prikazuje zgodovinski razvoj žanra žalostink v dolgi judovski zgodovini. Posebno pozornost posveča njihovi čustveni izrazni globini in religiozni navdahnjenosti pesnikov v izrazih žalovanja za umrlimi. Kot razkrivajo žalne pesmi, so nekateri umrli zaradi bolezni, mnogo pa jih je izgubilo življenje zaradi nasilja preganjalcev. Pogosto so postali žrtve zaradi svoje drugačnosti v kulturi in veri ter zaradi svoje ekonomske dejavnosti, zlasti ban...

Hibernians Versus Hebrews? A New Look at the 1902 Jacob Joseph Funeral Riot

On July 29, 1902 a massive funeral procession for Jacob Joseph, the esteemed Chief Rabbi of the Orthodox community, wound its way through the streets of New York's Lower East Side. The solemn occasion was marred, however, when the procession was attacked by a group of factory workers. As the melee blossomed into a full-scale riot, a contingent of New York City policemen arrived and proceeded to pummel and arrest the mourners rather than the instigators. Historians have consistendy cited this ugly incident as a vivid example of Irish Catholic antisemitism, noting that both the workers and policemen were “predominantly Irish.” Indeed, it was a quest to learn more about the roots of Irish Catholic antisemitism that drew this historian to the subject. And yet, a thorough examination of the incident produced a startling result: a dearth of Irish defendants and a flawed historiography that ultimately call into question the validity of the Jacob Joseph Funeral Riot as an example of Irish Catholic antisemitism.
