“…The most likely reason is a decline in walking. In less motorised countries many more pedestrians are killed by impacts with buses and trucks than in motorised countries, so a strong case can be made for pedestrian-friendly fronts for buses and trucks 17. Yet such measures presently are not given any priority.…”

“…In New Delhi, India, about two thirds of crashes involve buses or trucks (19), but many of the people killed or seriously injured are neither passengers nor drivers but vulnerable road users outside the vehicles (159). Several studies (19,128,(158)(159)(160) have identified safer bus and truck fronts as an urgent need.…”

“…In low-income and middle-income countries, similar laws are urgently needed to improve the fronts of buses, trucks, pick-ups, vans and the unique vehicles found in some cities (128,158,159). In New Delhi, India, about two thirds of crashes involve buses or trucks (19), but many of the people killed or seriously injured are neither passengers nor drivers but vulnerable road users outside the vehicles (159).…”

“…In a large number of crashes, injuries and fatalities are caused to VRUs (Vulnerable Road Users) in frontal impacts. Research has been done in India and Europe showing that fatalities in such impacts can be reduced significantly by designing safer bus fronts (APROSYS 2004;Chawla et al 2000;Kajzer et al1992). It would be appropriate if the recommendations of these reports to set standards for protection of VRUs in impact with buses are put in place as early as possible.…”
