Safety management in private construction project in Iraq

In the construction industry, safety issues are considered major concerns. Despite recent attempts to improve safety in the construction sector, this sector is considered dangerous and unsafe. Construction safety management in Iraq is plagued by a high incidence of construction accidents, resulting in a higher number of injuries and fatalities. Creating a safety program is one strategy to alleviate this problem by making safety an intrinsic part of construction projects. Defining which factors are the most significant and have the greatest effect on safety performance is crucial to building a complete safety program. It ensures that construction companies are not wasting money on inadequate safety programs. As a result, this article aims to identify the critical safety factors that influence safety performance in Iraqi construction projects and assign a relative weight to them based on their importance. First, relevant literature was reviewed to identify the safety performance factors. Second, the Pivot Pairwise Relative Criteria Importance Assessment (PIPRECIA), a recently proposed technique for calculating criteria weights, was employed to determine the relative weight of factors. In this paper, a list of 21 sub-factors classified into 8 categories of main factors was identified. Finally, the findings of PIPRECIA show that the "Management Practices" factor has the top rank with a weight of 0.4221 among the other main safety factors. The results also showed that among the 21 sub-factors, the three with the highest weights, 0.0686, 0.0665, and 0.0619, belonged to "Personal protective equipment (PPE)", "First aid and medical care" and "Housekeeping program", which were under the "Management Practices" factor. Further, the "Regular safety inspections" and "Contractor safety rewards and punishment programs" sub-factors were identified as the least important sub-factors with weights of 0.0350 and 0.0333, respectively.

The Impact of Safety Priorities on the Economic Management of Projects: A Review

A systematic study for analyzing the foundational concerns of safety economics was presented in this study. Firstly, safety, its historical background, and the accidental issues in construction were explored. Then, for the sake of this research, safety economists are defined as a multidisciplinary topic that examines the interrelationships and covariation of economics with safety. The cost of safety serves as a bridge between economics and safety in the field of safety economics. The definition of safety economics highlights its function in the choice of safety measures and the amount of money spent on manufacturing. Reviewing the literature highlighted the concerns regarding the economic safety including awareness and tackling the conflicts between safety and economics. At the end, a section highlighted the importance of safety economics in construction was provided.

Contributory Factors and Implications of Excavation Accidents in the Rumaila Oil Field, Basra

This study sought to elucidate the circumstances underpinning excavation accidents at the Rumaila oil field in Basra. A diverse cohort of 116 professionals, including site managers, safety officers, foremen overseeing excavation work, flagmen, operators, and laborers, were surveyed. Employing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24, hazards were ranked by relevance, and the rationale for these rankings was explicated using the relative importance index approach. The primary precipitators of accidents during excavation were identified as unsafe conditions, personal factors, unsafe acts, and occupational factors. The most pronounced consequences were damage to facilities and soil collapse, accompanied by the release of gases such as H2S and CH4. The ensuing human, environmental, and economic tolls were substantial, including the revocation of work permits and a sustained decline in oil output by 100,000 barrels per day.
