Purpose Contrasted with some other industries, the construction industry has been linked with the most noteworthy accident occurrence rate, the majority of which has been related to poor health and safety practises. This paper therefore sets out to conduct a comprehensive review of the critical success factors that can aid sustainable health and safety practises on construction sites in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachThe review focussed heavily on published reports, drawn between the years 2000 and 2022. The Scopus database was used for gathering the articles reviewed for this study.Findings After reviewing various literature studies, a total of 106 critical success factors were identified. All these factors were then categorised under the three pillars of sustainability. A total of 48 factors were grouped under the economic factors, 37 factors were grouped under the social factors and the remaining 21 factors were grouped under the environmental factors.Originality/valueThis paper conducted a comprehensive review of the critical success factors for bridging sustainability and health and safety. This study will help in developing a sustainable health and safety model that can drastically reduce the accident rate on the construction site.

Las Prácticas de Gestión de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (PGSST) han sido un parteaguas en la prevención de riesgos y enfermedades laborales, ya que mediante la implementación de estas en los centros de trabajo es posible reducir los índices de accidentes en las organizaciones. Por tal razón, el objetivo de este trabajo fue la identificación de las PGSST clave por su relevancia en la literatura internacional, para lo cual se realizó una búsqueda de literatura en fuentes documentales como Science Direct, Hindawi Publishing Corporation, Emerald, Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing (MDPI), la American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), European Proceedings of Social & Behavioural Sciences y African Journals Online, entre otras. El análisis realizado se reporta en una matriz resumen y una gráfica que registran nueve PGSST claves identificadas con base en la frecuencia de su presencia en la literatura revisada: la capacitación; compromiso de gestión y dirección; la comunicación y retroalimentación; la participación de los trabajadores; la política de seguridad; los procedimientos de trabajo seguro, la promoción de seguridad; la evaluación de riesgos; y la planificación de seguridad.

One of the important factors affecting the production safety of a country or region is the level of economic development. Avoiding accidents under the condition of ensuring economic development is a problem that needs in-depth research. On the basis of collecting the data of occupational accidents and economic development indicators in China from 2000 to 2020, this paper studies the relationship between occupational accidents and five economic indicators, such as resident consumption, energy consumption, education funds, wage level and research input. The grey working accident model of Gaussian function is established, the occurrence trend of occupational accidents is quantitatively analyzed, and the accident reduction measures are suggested based on the relationship between accidents and economy. The results show that there is a strong correlation between accident and economic indicators, and the comprehensive correlation coefficient among scientific research investment, education funds and accident indicators is significantly higher than that of other economic indicators. Increasing investment in scientific research and education is conducive to improving the quality of workers and training safety professionals and can effectively reduce workplace accidents.
