Safety of an artificial iris in a phakic eye

Abstract: This case report describes the one-year results of the implantation of a sectorial and foldable artificial iris in a phakic eye. To our knowledge, this is the first such report with a follow-up of 1 year. No perioperative or postoperative complications were seen. Corrected distance visual acuity remained unchanged (left eye, 1.5/10), the subjective complaints of glare and photophobia improved considerably, and the patient was very satisfied with the aesthetic result.

“…However, in the case of Magnus et al. (), mentioned earlier, no cataract development was observed despite the fact that 15 months after surgery, cataract surgery was performed according to the patient's wish. Furthermore, surgical techniques should be adjusted to the individual eye characteristics.…”

“…Contradictory reports exist regarding certain cosmetic types [ 23 ] of anterior-chamber Artificial Iris implantation in phakic eyes. [ 24 ] In addition, some patients are unhappy with the necessary indications [ 10 ] for aesthetic impairment (ie, AbCDefGh). Thus; we were motivated to make progress in this area of medicine.…”

“…[ 20 , 21 ] In this complex case of a perforating trauma with a corneal scar, an Artisan lens and a history of 9 surgeries (including primary repair, secondary IOL implantation, deep vitrectomies, and so on), a suturable Artificial Iris with fiber seemed more reliable than Artificial Iris without mesh. [ 10 , 20 , 21 , 24 , 25 ] In contrast, to provide an appropriately sized (approximately 12-mm or less) Artificial Iris according to the OCT, W-W, and S-S preoperative evaluations [ 16 ] and intraoperative measurements using a ruler, [ 26 ] cutting and resizing are recommended because the Artificial Iris is sized at 12.8 mm. Even smaller (11 mm) irises have also been recommended [ 20 , 21 ] for glaucoma prevention.…”

“…[12] In current literature, there are only a few case reports and case series addressing the aesthetic outcome of this technique of iris reconstruction. [13][14][15][16][17] Our study aimed to systematically evaluate the aesthetic outcome of iris reconstruction using this custom-made silicone artificial iris prosthesis in a large group of patients with total and partial aniridia.…”
