SALDI-MS Signal enhancement using oxidized graphitized carbon black nanoparticles

Abstract: The signal intensity of low-molecular-weight compounds analyzed using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-TOF-MS) was significantly enhanced when oxidized graphitized carbon black (GCB) particles were used as the desorption/ionization surface. The surface of oxidized GCB contains more carboxylic acid groups than non-oxidized GCB. Carboxylic acid groups enhance the efficiency of the ionization process and the desorption of more hydrophobic compounds. A common pha… Show more

“…Amini, Shariatgorji, and Thorsén () compared the sensitivity of non‐oxidized graphitized carbon black (GCB)‐NPs and oxidized GCB‐NPs for the detection of various pharmaceuticals. Oxidized GCB‐NPs contain more carboxylic acid groups in comparison to non‐oxidized GCB‐NPs and those acidic groups were found to increase the sensitivity of the analysis of small molecule pharmaceuticals including carbamazepine, propranolol, sulfaphenazole, sulfadimethoxine, tetraethylethylenediphosphonate, triphenylphosphate, dihydroxy‐streptomycine and tobranmycine.…”

“…62 The surface of oxidized GCB contains more carboxylic acid groups than non-oxidized GCB; these carboxylic acid groups enhance the efficiency of the desorption/ionization process of relatively more hydrophobic compounds. Kawasaki et al employed an oxidized, pyrolytic, highly oriented graphite polymer film with a SALDI film for an environmental analysis of low-mass analytes.…”

“…69 Amini et al employed oxidized graphitized carbon black (GCB) particles for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds. 70 The advantages of using GCB materials rather than CNTs are their low cost and greater content of carboxylic acid groups on their surface, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the ionization process and the desorption of hydrophobic compounds.…”
