“…Osmoregulation in the nitrogen fi xing rhizobacteria of the genus Azospirillum is well documented (Hartmann 1988 ;Riou and Le Rudulier 1990 ;Hartmann et al 1991Hartmann et al , 1992Riou et al 1991 ;Tripathi et al 1998 ). Bacteria of the genus Azospirillum accumulate compatible solutes such as gulatamate , proline , glycine betaine , trehalose in order to adapt to the fl uctuations in soil salinity.…”

“…Although it is generally accepted that Tn5 transposition does not involve replication, there is evidence that Tn5 can have a replicative mechanism of transposition. Characterization of a DNA fragment with a Tn5 insertion in a regulatory nifA type gene of A. brasilense (Singh et al 1989) revealed that duplication of IS50 occurred at the Tn5 insertion site (Tripathi et al 1998). Nucleotide sequencing of the Tn5 insertion region proved that IS50 was duplicated, and that, together with the insertion event, a 484 bp sequence was deleted from the outside end of the internal IS50.…”

“…Although some researchers informed that plants inoculated with A. brasilense show a better response against stress conditions, there is no information about the survival of this bacterium when it is grown in adverse environmental situations. However, it has been reported that Azospirillum accumulate compatible solutes as proline, glycine betaine, glutamate and trehalose to cope with osmotic stress (Tripathi et al, 1998;Yuwono, 2005;Rodriguez Salazar et al, 2009).…”
