Salivary and serum cortisol in patients with periodontal disease and oral lichen planus.

Abstract: Periodontitis and oral lichen planus are two oral diseases that affect the adult population worldwide. Aim: A positive relationship had been proposed between psychological stress, periodontitis and oral lichen planus. The general aim of our study was to investigate the levels of "cortisol", the stress-related hormone in patients with periodontal disease and oral lichen planus. Methodology. Our study included 20 patients with chronic periodontitis, 20 with oral lichen planus and 20 healthy subjects. We collecte… Show more

“…In this regard, lack of significance with the other used methods may be due to the low number of reported studies. Out of 10 studies reported [1,8,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25] in the present meta-analysis, six studies [1,18,19,21,23,24] showed a higher significant level of salivary cortisol in the OLP patients compared with the controls.…”

“…The studies were published from 2003 to 2017 and included 269 OLP patients and 268 controls. Four studies were reported from India [1,18,19,20], three from the Middle East [21,22,23], two from Europe [24,25], and one from Brazil [8]. In six studies [1,18,21,22,23,24], the detection method of salivary cortisol level was enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), whereas the remaining methods were radioimmunoassay in one study [8] and the chemiluminescence immunoassay in three studies [19,20,25].…”

“…About 57.14% estimated the serum cortisol levels by using Electrochemiluminescence method,[ 1 3 5 10 ] whereas the remaining methods were ELISA in one study (14.28%),[ 11 ] Chemiluminescence in another study (14.28%),[ 12 ] and Enhanced Lanthanide Fluoroimmunoassay in yet another study (14.28%). [ 13 ] All the seven studies (100%) analyzed serum cortisol levels in both LP and control group, which resulted in statistically higher serum cortisol levels than the control group.…”

“…Furthermore, some studies showed a positive correlation between the level of oxidative stress and the concentration of free salivary cortisol. Increased levels of cortisol have been found in patients with various forms of periodontitis and anxiety [ 16 , 17 ].…”
