Salivary pH as a psycho-physiological variable.

Abstract: There are many suggestions in the literature of the biological sciences that the pH of saliva 4 may be a valuable tool for the diagnosis and prediction of behavior. These suggestions arise from two major considerations. First, the salivary glands are dually innervated by the sympathetic and the parasyrnpathetic nervous systems and, consequently, may furnish indices of autonomic balance. Secondly, it is well known that extreme shifts in the pH of blood bring about behavioral changes ranging from tetany in alkal… Show more

“…There is also little question of the association of psychological status and qualitative or quantitative alterations in saliva. [23][24][25] Salivary function may also directly reflect activity of the physiologic pathways involved in the mediation of stress. For example, activity of the adrenal cortex is reflected in the elevation of steroid levels in saliva in response to parenteral injection of ACTH.…”

“…To enhance the subtle alterations of saliva fl ow and acidity (Gilchrist and Furchtgott 1951) our audiences had to speak certain phonemes repetitively while their saliva was harvested. Acidity, oxygen fl ow and temperature were continually measured by sensors; the ecological changes of microbes were projected on a large wall screen using a dark fi eld microscope, giving the whole performance room a more fl uid emanation of voices entangled with microbes.…”
