Salvage radiochemotherapy for lymph node recurrence after radical surgery of esophageal cancer

Abstract: To evaluate the efficacy of salvage radiochemotherapy (SRC) in patients with recurrent lymph node after radical surgery in esophageal cancer. This study enrolled 58 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent SRC for lymph node recurrence after radical surgery from August 2011 to November 2015 at our hospital. Survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan–Meier method with the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was conducted using the Cox model. The overall 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates a… Show more

“…However, locoregional recurrence (LRR) is the most common pattern of recurrence, and is noted in up to 23.8-58.0% of cases, whereas hematogeous metastasis is noted in approximately 5.5-33.0% of cases [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The median time to recurrence ranges from 7 to 12.5 months [7][8][9]. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, salvage chemoradiotherapy is preferably recommended for such patients with recurrence.…”

“…The outcomes of esophageal carcinoma patients who develop recurrence after curative esophagectomy has been reported to be poor. The one‐ and three‐year OS rates were approximately 45.9%–53.5% and 10.6%–22.7%, respectively in several studies. 9,19,20 However, in the present study, at the time of the last follow‐up, all the enrolled patients were still alive.…”

“…The CRT ± C group achieved a 3-year OS of 29.7% (95% CI: 20.0–43.3%) compared to 22.6% (95% CI: 13.8–37.2%) for RT ± C (P = 0.028), consistent with the reports of Ni 7 and Zhou. 16 …”
