Abstract. Research in collaborative editing tends to have been undertaken in isolation rather than as part of a general information or application infrastructure. Our goal is to develop a universal information platform that can support collaboration in a range of application domains. Since not all user groups have the same conventions and not all tasks have the same requirements, this implies that it should be possible to customize the collaborative editor at the level of both communities and individual tasks. One of the keys to customization is to use a structured rather than linear representation of documents that can be applied to both textual and graphical editors. In this paper, we propose the treeOPT (tree OPerational Transformation) algorithm that, relying on a tree representation of documents, applies the operational transformation mechanism recursively over the different document levels. Applications using this algorithm achieve better efficiency, the possibility of working at different granularity levels and improvements in the semantic consistency.

Abstract. Group efficacy has begun to receive more attention in HCI. The paper describes a mixed-design experiment aimed to explore the effect of time on group efficacy development in two computer-mediated virtual conditions: asynchronous vs. multi-synchronous teams. The relationships of group efficacy measures at different times and tool evaluation, team satisfaction and performance are also explored. Forty university students who participate in the study are administered questionnaires over the course of the assigned ten-day task. Results show group efficacy changes as a function of time in the asynchronous environment. In addition, the positive relations between group efficacy and tool evaluation and adoption and team satisfaction were demonstrated for asynchronous groups. The findings indicate group efficacy is dynamic with team development and useful in signaling how technology and collaboration modes impact user experience and interaction in the asynchronous environment.

Abstract:As XML documents are increasingly being used in a wide variety of applications and often people work in teams distributed across space and time, it is very important that users are supported for editing collaboratively XML documents. Existing tools do not offer appropriate support for the management of conflicting changes performed in parallel on XML documents. In this paper we propose a merging mechanism that offers users the possibility to define conflict nodes prevented from integration of concurrent changes. Changes referring to non-conflict nodes are automatically merged, while users are assisted to manually merge changes referring to conflict nodes. Changes are tracked by means of operations associated to the nodes they target and merging relies on an operation-transformation mechanism adapted for hierarchical structures.
