Special Economic Zones (SEZs) facilitate heightened free trade logistics, enabling companies to expand their operations and product development within a nation. This study seeks to geomechanically characterise a pilot area within the Special Economic Zone Development Zone (ZEDE) at ESPOL Polytechnic University, Ecuador. The area has been marked by limited information concerning the geotechnical properties of the soil and rock formations. The goal of the study is to inform referential zoning for constructions, thereby fostering sustainable development of businesses and industries in the area. The methodology utilised in this study was threefold: (i) an inquiry into existing data and an on-site inspection, (ii) a geophysical campaign encompassing Vertical Electrical Soundings, seismic refraction, and geotechnical characterisation for result correlation, and (iii) an assessment of slope stability, on-site response spectrums, soil profile classifications, safety factors, and construction risk zoning. The study area, approximately 28 ha, was characterised by soils and rock formations, such as lapilli tuffs and tuffaceous shales, with resistive loads reaching up to 26.10 MPa. These geotechnical attributes permit the construction of structures exceeding four stories. The integration of geological and geotechnical data revealed that 75% of the study area presents low to medium construction risk related to instability, thereby indicating suitable areas for territorial planning. The methodology proposed in this study provides a replicable tool for application across the ZEDE, facilitating the creation of strategies for a land-use plan within an innovative university campus. Future large-scale studies could incorporate hydrogeological analysis, evaluation of environmental impact, and the development of mitigation plans for anthropogenic activities.

Floods generated by rain cause significant economic and human losses. The campus of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) has a drainage system that conducts stormwater to two discharge points outside the campus. The system works effectively at the macro-drainage level. However, a very crowded area is deficient at the micro-drainage level, which has registered flooding and the proliferation of vectors that affect people’s health. This work aimed to design a masterplan for stormwater sewerage by analyzing the existing situation and applying technical criteria that allow the establishment of solutions and strategies to control floods at the university campus. The methodology consisted of: (i) data collection and processing for the stormwater drainage system diagnosis; (ii) a design proposal for micro-drainage and (iii) a SWOT analysis to propose improvement strategies in water management. The resulting flows for return periods of 5 years, 10 years, and 25 years are 9.67 m3/s, 11.85 m3/s, and 15.85 m3/s, respectively. In the latter, as the most critical area (presence of flooding), the implementation of a trapezoidal channel 80.20 m long, with a capacity of 1.00 m3/s, for a return period of 25 years was proposed. The stormwater masterplan will contribute to the execution of activities within the campus and prevent accidents and the proliferation of diseases, constituting a water-management model that can be replicated locally, regionally, and internationally.

The protection of health and the prevention of water-related diseases is a major challenge for water supply systems. Disinfection ensures the effective elimination of any pathogenic organism that may be a source of waterborne diseases. Based on Royal Decree 902/2018, of 20 July, based on the WHO risk assessment methodology and from which the Water Health Plans are derived, and Royal Decree 140/2003, of 7 February, which establishes the health criteria for the quality of water for human consumption, the correct compliance with the Water Health Plan, recently implemented at the University of Alicante, is analysed through an extensive campaign of quality analysis at different points throughout the university. In addition, different agronomic indices are studied to determine its suitability as irrigation water. It is concluded that, despite the long period of disuse of the facilities caused by the pandemic and inactivity during the summer months, the water on campus has the minimum quality required, being suitable for human consumption and increasing the confidence of users in the quality of drinking water on campus.
