Sarcopenia Detection System Using RGB-D Camera and Ultrasound Probe: System Development and Preclinical In-Vitro Test

Abstract: Sarcopenia is defined as muscle mass and strength loss with aging. As places, such as South Korea, Japan, and Europe have entered an aged society, sarcopenia is attracting global attention with elderly health. However, only few developed devices can quantify sarcopenia diagnosis modalities. Thus, the authors developed a sarcopenia detection system with 4 degrees of freedom to scan the human thigh with ultrasound probe and determine whether he/she has sarcopenia by inspecting the length of muscle thickness in t… Show more

“…This technology enables the precise capture of intricate movements performed by skilled practitioners, resulting in accurate and detailed digital representations (Zhou et al, 2019). Motion capture systems utilize sensors and cameras to track markers on the body, ensuring high precision and fidelity in recording martial arts movements (Kim et al, 2015). The captured data preserves the subtleties and nuances of each technique, providing a comprehensive representation of the art form.…”

“…Traditional martial arts often involve dynamic and acrobatic movements that may pose challenges for motion capture systems. Fast-paced and complex motions, such as jumps, flips, and spins, can be difficult to capture accurately due to limitations in marker tracking and occlusion (Kim et al, 2015). These limitations may result in incomplete or distorted representations of the movements, affecting the fidelity of the preserved cultural heritage.…”

“…Some technological systems to evaluate sarcopenia have been recently developed [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ], but these are rarely available in the market and their validity has yet to be established. Although the presented system still uses manual anthropometric evaluations (i.e., body circumferences and skinfolds), which represents an important limitation amongst older adults because of their skin and fat tissue properties [ 46 ], anthropometric evaluations do have economic and time-consuming advantages compared with current lab methods (MRI, MRS, CT, and DXA).…”
