Saudi Aramco Intelligent Field Development Approach: Building the Surveillance Layer

Abstract: The Intelligent field is the oil industry's new trend that enables continuous monitoring and optimization of individual wells and overall reservoir performance. This is achieved by integrating fields' real time data in the reservoir management business processes. The results from this integration are anticipated to increase production rates, identify opportunities for higher hydrocarbon recoveries and reduce operating costs and future capital expenditures.Saudi Aramco has embarked on implementing the Intellige… Show more

“…Additionally, service level agreements and services such as help desk and I-Field Support were identified and are being implemented. All of these developments form a key component in the development of the I-Field Surveillance Layer (Al-Dhubaib et al, 2008); building the foundation of Saudi Aramco's I-Field architecture.…”

“…These two fields served as a pilot and test ground for capturing lessons learned and for re-defining users' and I-Field general requirements. The results of this experience led to the development of several I-Field guidelines and specifications and to the implementation of many components and elements of the surveillance layer (Al-Dhubaib et al, 2008). This paper presents Saudi Aramco's experience and methodology of assessing field-to-desktop data acquisition and delivery infrastructure of the pilot projects' fields.…”

“…This is achieved by integrating fields' real time data in the reservoir management business processes. The results from this integration are anticipated to increase production rates, identify opportunities for higher hydrocarbon recoveries and reduce operating costs and future capital expenditures (Al-Dhubaib, 2008). It was explained by AbdulKarim, 2010, that in the industry, integration of the various digital surface and subsurface technologies into E&P business processes has been given different names, such as: Smart fields, Intelligent Field (I-Field), Digital Oil Field of the Future (DOFOF), integrated field (I-field) and Integrated Operations (IO).…”

“…The concept of the intelligent field, which enables continuous monitoring and optimization of individual wells and overall reservoir performance, has been introduced to enhance oil recovery, improve health, safety and environment (HSE), and reduce operation cost. So far the project construction has been completed and CO 2 will be ready for injection by 2013 (Al-Dhubaib et al, 2008;PME, 2011).…”
