“…Fortytwo species of Poa, including two samples of P. jubata and two subspecies of P. trivialis, were chosen to represent all subgenera of Poa (classification following Gillespie et al, 2007;Soreng et al, 2009Soreng et al, , 2010Soreng et al, , 2015aRefulio et al, 2012;Peterson and Soreng, 2016). The Poa species included in our study represent selections from all 10 plastid and 11 nrDNA genotype groups previously identified , including the x-clade .…”

“…In this case, the DNA data provided the critical evidence that this taxon did not belong within Poa. Saxipoa is most similar to the Australian genus Hookerochloa, sharing several morphological characters, including densely pubescent rachillas and sheath margins fused only at base (discussed in Soreng et al 2009). Saxipoa resolved as the sister to the AQN subclade with moderate support, but also shares some DNA sequence characteristics with Hookerochloa, including a 20-bp insertion in TLF sequences.…”

“…DNA variation within supersection Homalopoa was insufficient to resolve what group might be sister to this Australasian section. Soreng et al (2009) placed most Poa section Brizoides species within the following four subsections: Australopoa (with 35 spp. in Australia, six in New Zealand, and possibly one in New Guinea), Austrofestuca (2 spp.…”

“…Despite difficulties mentioned in the preceding part, Poa has attracted the attention of several agrostologists including Bor (1970) (29) with the species number given in the parenthesis. More recently, Soreng and Peterson (2012), provided a revisionary account of the genus from Mexico with new reports resulting from latest delimitation of species within the genus.…”
