“…Lepidological observations using light microscopy were performed following the methods of Takagi (1953), Roberts (1993), Lippitsch (1993), Kuusipalo (1998, 2000) and Jawad (2005 a , b ). For the purpose of this study, the fish body was divided into eight regions (Fig.…”

“…The squamation pattern was recorded following Lippitsch (1990, 1992). SEM was used to investigate scale ultrastructure following Lanzing & Higginbotham (1974), Lippitsch (1992), Roberts (1993), Kuusipalo (1998) and Jawad (2005 a , b ). Scales to be used for SEM were air‐dried and mounted on an aluminium stub using double‐sided carbon tape.…”

“…Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate scale ultrastructure following the methods of Lanzing & Higginbotham (1974), Lippitsch (1992), Roberts (1993), and Kuusipalo (1998). The scales to be used for SEM were air-dried and mounted on aluminium specimen stubs using double-sided sticky tape.…”

“…This included the description of scale distribution over different parts of the body. A lepidological study using light microscopy was performed following the methods of Takagi (1953), Roberts (1993), Lippitsch (1993), and Kuusipalo (1998). The scales were removed from each region using forceps and bleached in 1% KOH solution.…”

“…The morphology of the scales and in particular the ornamentation of their outer surface (circuli, lepidonts, tubercles, spines, cteni) has been examined by various authors in studies on taxonomy and on the evolution of the Teleostea (De Lamater & Courtenay 1973;Hollander 1986;Roberts 1993;Mekkawy et al 1999;Miranda & Escala 2000;Sire & Arnulf 2000;Kaur & Dua 2004;Jawad 2005). Lippitsch (1990Lippitsch ( , 1992Lippitsch ( , 1993Lippitsch ( , 1995 and Kuusipalo (1998Kuusipalo ( , 2000 showed that in cichlids the morphology of scales and the characteristics of their distribution were useful in the investigation of phyletic relationships. Jawad and Al-Jufaili (2007) recently carried out a comparative study on scale morphology and squamation of Saurida tumbil (Bloch, 1795) to identify the most useful characters for future systematic studies.…”
