Scanning Cargo Containers with Tagged Neutrons

Abstract

A new Tagged Neutron Inspection System (TNIS) able to detect illicit materials such as explosives and narcotics in cargo containers has been developed within the EURopean Illicit TRAfficing Countermeasures Kit (EURITRACK) project. After the R&D phase, the inspection portal has been installed and commissioned at the Rijeka seaport in Croatia, where it has been operated in connection with the existing X-ray scanner for a first two-month demonstration campaign. Results obtained are presented and discussed in this paper.

In-field tests of the EURITRACK tagged neutron inspection system

“…The reference test in case of the EURITRACK project consists in detecting a 100 kg TNTequivalent target hidden in a container filled with a metallic matrix of average density 0.2 g/cm 3 and has already been simulated in the laboratory [3,4]. Following these laboratory validation tests, the EURITRACK system has been assembled and commissioned in the Croatian seaport of Rijeka, where it has been used in a test campaign [5]. Implementation and performances of the system, as well as the results obtained during the field tests with real cargo containers are presented in this paper.…”
