Schistosomiasis in the Northern State of Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: It is estimated that Schistosoma mansoni is present in 19 Brazilian states and one of the factors responsible for the spread of schistosomiasis is the migration of individuals from endemic areas, particularly from northeastern Brazil. In the municipality of Conceição da Barra, northern state of Espírito Santo, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of schistosomiasis among sugarcane cutting workers in the alcohol industry, who migrated from the northeastern region of the country. For the diagnosis … Show more

“…The result of our generalized linear model with interactions between farming type and gender, and farming type and religion using sugar cane farming type as a reference point, given that this type of farming has been reported to be strongly correlated with schistosomiasis (Amorim et al, 2014), shows that vegetable farming is signi cantly different from other types of farming while infection prevalence between male vegetable farmers is also statistically different from female vegetable farmers. The odds of contracting urinary schistosomiasis among vegetable farmers are 3.5 higher than other types of farming while the odds of male vegetable farmers getting infected is 0.04 signi cantly higher than female vegetable farmers.…”

“…We used descriptive statistics to calculate the frequency of schistosomiasis infections among the farmers. We used sugar cane farming as a reference point since it has been shown to be strongly correlated with schistosomiasis (Amorim et al, 2014), to analyze the association between faming type & gender and faming type & religion using generalized linear model (glm), with signi cance testing. P values of <0.05 were considered statistically signi cant.…”

“…Not less important, the presence of molluscs Biomphalaria, S. mansoni intermediates, was related to impacted areas (Souza & Melo, 2012), especially in the municipalities of Mucurici, Montanha, Pinheiros and Pedro Canário. Several collection stations presented environmental conditions with some anthropic modification and, although none of the molluscs showed positive for S. mansoni, the very presence of infected residents or seasonal workers in the region, as verified by Amorim et al (2014), may favor the spread of schistosomiasis.…”

“…Additionally, the introduction of exotic mollusc species such as Melanoides tuberculata has contributed to the elimination of certain native species (Avellar, 1999;Mansur et al, 2012). Among the gastropods, a group of more numerous and diverse animals of the phylum Mollusca, the Biomphalaria (Planorbidae), intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, stand out, since they are responsible for the maintenance and propagation of schistosomiasis, a disease that affects millions of individuals worldwide and, in Brazil, is still a public health problem (SBMT, 2013;Amorim et al, 2014).…”

“…Estima-se hoje um número de casos entre 6 e 8 milhões de pessoas infectadas. Historicamente a região nordeste possui os maiores números de casos da doença, destacando-se a Paraíba como um dos estados com maior prevalência (AMORIM et al, 2014).…”
