“…URING the past 20 years, many articles have appeared in the literature describing the relationship of emotions and diabetes mellitus. The emphasis has varied, but can be divided roughly into several categories: 1) the relationship between emotional disturbances and the onset of diabetes ( 6, 16); 2) the relationship of emotions and the course of the diabetes (6, 13,14,17,20); 3) the personality structure of the diabetic (2,4,5,7,11,14,15,16,17,20,23); and 4) emotional reactions to the diabetic management (1,2,3,19,22). Although the literature is quite extensive, actually there are few detailed longitudinal case reports of the psychiatric treatment of diabetes, and particularly of diabetic children, even though 5 to 8 per cent of all cases of diabetes are recognized in the period of childhood (18).…”

“…o i ) . Kasin and Parker's comparisons of diabetic death rates (16), which, of course, do not assure similar comparisons for living diabetics, indicate 11.9 per 100,000 among schizophrenics, 89.8 per 100,000 among all other psychotics, and 23 per 100,000 among the population of the United States as a whole.…”

“…Although in 1943 the combination of schizophrenia and diabetes was described as “extremely rare,” this comorbidity cluster is known to be more common in present day (Kasin and Parker, 1943; Dixon et al, 2000; Rouillon and Sorbara, 2005). When evaluating diabetes and schizophrenia more closely, the highest rates of ED visits are for all other causes than diabetes or mental health chief complaints.…”
