“…URING the past 20 years, many articles have appeared in the literature describing the relationship of emotions and diabetes mellitus. The emphasis has varied, but can be divided roughly into several categories: 1) the relationship between emotional disturbances and the onset of diabetes ( 6, 16); 2) the relationship of emotions and the course of the diabetes (6, 13,14,17,20); 3) the personality structure of the diabetic (2,4,5,7,11,14,15,16,17,20,23); and 4) emotional reactions to the diabetic management (1,2,3,19,22). Although the literature is quite extensive, actually there are few detailed longitudinal case reports of the psychiatric treatment of diabetes, and particularly of diabetic children, even though 5 to 8 per cent of all cases of diabetes are recognized in the period of childhood (18).…”
