Schlemm's canal and trabecular meshwork morphology in high myopia

Abstract: This study reports for the first time that eyes with high myopia have a larger Schlemm's canal diameter and area, as well as decreased trabecular meshwork thickness, which may help to understand the close association between high myopia and open-angle glaucoma. Schlemm's canal and trabecular meshwork analysis by OCT images may help to characterise the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms involved in high myopia.

“…The three-dimensional (3D) anterior segment mode was used for whole-range scanning in the PAS analysis. Another 3D angle high-definition mode was performed separately in each of the four quadrants (nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior) for further angle analysis [ 17 ]. The patients were told to sit and stare at one of four fixation lights in turn during the test.…”

“…The TM length was regarded as the distance between the scleral spur and the Schwalbe's line. According to our previous reports 13,14 , each TM width measurement was made perpendicular to the inner layer of the meshwork. The TM width was calculated as the average of two measurements made at the anterior end point of SC and halfway down the SC.…”

“…Optical coherence tomography has also been used to investigate the pathophysiology of myopia. For example, Chen et al 21 describe the use of swept source OCT to measure the size of Schlemm's canal and the trabecular meshwork in individuals with or without myopia. The aim was to understand why myopia increases open angle glaucoma risk.…”

“…The aim was to understand why myopia increases open angle glaucoma risk. Chen et al 21 observed that high myopia was associated with increased Schlemm's canal and decreased trabecular meshwork size relative to controls. This finding provides a possible explanation for the relationship between myopia and open angle glaucoma.…”
