Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for folate

Abstract: Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) derived Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for folate. The Panel concludes that an Average Requirement (AR), as well as a Population Reference Intake (PRI) assuming a coefficient of variation (CV) of 15 % to account for the additional variability associated with the higher requirement for folate in individuals with the methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677TT genotype, can be derived from biom… Show more

“…In 2014, EFSA provided an opinion on the dietary reference values for folate (EFSA NDA Panel, 2014). For infants aged 7-11 months an adequate intake (AI) for folate was set at 80 lg dietary folate equivalents (DFE)/day but no UL could be defined.…”

“…The EFSA opinion on dietary reference values for folate (EFSA NDA Panel, 2014) reports results on dietary intake of folate for one national survey for infants (0.5 to < 1 year) reporting median DFE intake of 70 lg/day, and two national surveys for young children (1 to < 4 years) reporting median DFE intakes ranging from 111 to 128 lg/day. “…In a previous opinion (EFSA NDA Panel, 2014i), the Panel proposed a PRI for folate for adults of 330 µg dietary folate equivalents (DFE) per day. As there is evidence that natural food folates have a lower bioavailability than folic acid, DFE have been introduced in order to account for these differences and were defined as 1 µg DFE = 1 µg food folate = 0.6 µg folic acid from fortified food or as a supplement consumed with food = 0.5 µg of a folic acid supplement taken on an empty stomach.…”

“…There is a close metabolic interaction with folate, which has led to the "methyl-trap hypothesis" (Shane and Stokstad, 1985;EFSA NDA Panel, 2014). Cobalamin and folate are linked via the enzyme methionine synthase, which converts 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-methyl-THF) to tetrahydrofolate (THF) which is needed in one-carbon metabolism.…”
