Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for selenium

Abstract: Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) derived Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for selenium. The levelling off of plasma selenoprotein P (SEPP1) concentration was considered indicative of an adequate supply of selenium to all tissues and to reflect saturation of the functional selenium body pool, ensuring that selenium requirement is met. This criterion was used for establishing DRVs for selenium in adults. Evidence from human studies on … Show more

“…Human health may be both beneficially and adversely affected by this metalloid and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set an Adequate Intake of 70 µg/day for adults [16]. Selenium is an abundant nutrient in fish, and a known antagonist of MeHg toxicity, however the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown.…”

“…The biological role of selenium and its deficiency and toxicity symptoms in farm animals and in humans were described in EFSA previous opinions of the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) (EFSA, 2006) and of the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) (EFSA NDA Panel, 2014). Selenium is a trace element, which is essential for vertebrates and is involved in a series of vital metabolic functions (e.g.…”

“…In a recent opinion on dietary references values (DRV) for selenium (EFSA NDA Panel, 2014), the estimated average selenium intakes in the EU for children aged from 1 to < 3 years and adults (≥ 18 years) ranged from 17 to 36 μg Se/day and from 31 to 66 μg Se/day, respectively. These figures include also selenium intake from food of animal origin.…”
