Sclerosing mesenteritis

Abstract: Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare benign process involving mesenteric fat that has non-specific histology and imaging characteristics, which are critical to the diagnosis. It has two different pathological variants: mesenteric panniculitis (acute or subacute) and retractile mesenteritis (chronic). This case study illustrates the radiological findings of sclerosing mesenteritis, describes certain signs that suggest the diagnosis and reviews recent published literature.

“…The co existence of lymphomas has also been reported by others [23], justifying the clinical importance of the early diagnosis of this condition. The overall prognosis of sclerosing mesenteritis is usually very good with a benign and self limiting course in most of the cases [13]. The pain disappears in 75% patients and mass regresses in 66%, usually within 2 years [24].…”

“…3,4 Its etiology is unknown, although autoimmunity, infections, IUD usage, drug use, trauma, malignancy, abdominal surgery, urinary leakage, and local ischemia are all predisposing factors. [3][4][5][6][7] Case Report A 43-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with left flank pain. Intravenous pyelography (IVP), performed at another center, showed hydroureteronephrosis (Fig.…”

“…The first reported series featured 34 cases of "retractile mesenteritis and mesenteric sclerosis"; published in 1924 [1-3]. It has been described variously as fibrosing mesenteritis, retractile mesenteritis, liposclerotic mesenteritis, xanthogranulomatous mesenteritis, mesenteric Weber Christian disease and systemic nodular panniculitis [4]. These names possibly reflect the underlying pathology involved with mesenteric lipodystrophy (predominant fatty degeneration), mesenteric panniculitis (chronic inflammation) and retractile mesenteritis (predominant fibrosis) being the common histologic variants.…”
