Sclerosing Microcystic Adenocarcinoma Arising from the Tongue: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: Sclerosing microcystic adenocarcinoma is a rare and recently characterized cancer that affects the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck without adnexal involvement. Histologically, microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the skin resembles it. It does, however, contain unique characteristics that merit our attention for potential diagnostic errors. Therefore, we present a 48-year-old male with sclerosing microcystic adenocarcinoma of the tongue, along with a full discussion and a brief review of pertinent literature. Show more

“…To our knowledge, no study has conducted a detailed review of the MRI findings of SMA. Among the 21 reported cases of SMA, imaging findings were described in 4, as follows: computed tomography (CT) (n = 2), 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG-PET/CT) (n = 1), and MRI (n = 2) [ 11 , 13 , 17 , 18 ]. As these reports did not describe the imaging findings of the SMA in detail, we reviewed the available images and summarized the findings as follows.…”
