Pakistan

Abstract

Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, came into existence on August 14, 1947, when British colonial rule in India ended. Pakistan's founding was preceded by a Muslim nationalist movement spearheaded by the All‐India Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It was premised on the “two‐nation theory.” This ideology holds that Muslims and Hindus of the Indian subcontinent constitute two separate nations and a newly carved state of Pakistan ought to serve as a separate “homeland” for Muslims. However, there was no consensus then on how the idea of a territorially based Muslim nation‐state should translate into state formation. Consequently, struggles over a corresponding Muslim religious identity have been a continuous feature of politics in Pakistan. Religious minorities, particularly the controversial Ahmadiyya community, have emerged as a key site upon and through which Pakistan's religious identity has been contested, negotiated, and implemented through state laws and policies.
