Screening for colorectal cancer using the faecal occult blood test, Hemoccult

Abstract: Background Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in the Western world. The human and financial costs have prompted considerable research to evaluate screening tests to detect the cancer at an early curable stage. Tests that have been considered for population screening include the faecal occult blood test (FOBT), flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Reducing mortality from colorectal cancer (CRC) may be achieved by the introduction of population-based screening programm… Show more

“…In der aktuellsten Metaanalyse dieser Studien konnte eine Senkung der KRK-bedingten Mortalität um 25 % für diejenigen gezeigt werden, die sich mindestens einmal einem FOBT unterzogen hatten (relatives Risiko 0,75, 95 % CI 0,66 -0,84) [155]. In drei der vier Studien wurde der gFOBT alle zwei Jahre durchgeführt.…”

“…Early detection through screening has been shown to be cost-effective (Tappenden et al, 2007) and effective in reducing CRC mortality (Hewitson, Glasziou, Irwig, Towler, & Watson, 2007;Schoen et al, 2012).…”

“…Some studies reported a decline in the rate of colorectal cancer by the use of various screening modalities. According to them the mean mortality related to colorectal cancer was reduced by 10-22% after 12-18 years of following the screening program (Hewitson et al, 2008;Jemal et al, 2010;Siegel et al, 2012).…”
