Screening for peripheral neuropathy in chemical warfare victims

Abstract: We aimed to assess the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in chemical warfare victims. We speculated that peripheral neuropathy is a late complication of exposure to chemical warfare agents. Late complications of exposure to chemical warfare agents are not well known and are poorly discussed in the existing literature. Scientific data regarding delayed complications are sparse, but this warrants recognition, especially when the clinician has to treat chemical warfare victims. The hazards of organophosphate pe… Show more

“…More recently, in a cross‐sectional study in 100 CWA Iranian veterans, Holisaz et al . reported five patients suffering from axonal neuropathy, which is significantly higher than what is found in the normal population. In a cohort study of 74 OP‐poisoned patients 13 years post‐exposure, EMG and NCV were normal except for two severely affected patients .…”

“…In another study conducted on four of 98 chemical warfare victims, with severe mustard gas exposure and mean age of 49.8 years, EMG findings revealed positive sharp waves as well as fibrillations. The motor unit action potential defects in these cases indicated presence of axonal polyneuropathy (33). …”

“…Long-term peripheral neuropathy was observed in victims of the Iran-Iraq conflict, which lasted from 1980 to 1988. This peripheral neuropathy seemed to correlate with OP chemical exposure; however, no CNS damage was reported (Holisaz et al 2007). Another study assessed the gross neuroanatomical structures with quantitative MRI (Houston et al 2001) in veterans of the Gulf War who were possibly exposed to sarin and cyclosarin (Heaton et al 2007).…”

“…There is a well-established link between OP nerve agent exposure, neuropathological damage (Holisaz et al 2007) and long-term behavioral differences (McDonough et al 1986; Kadar et al 1995; Jamal 1997). A recent study echoed the link between sarin exposure and neuropathological alterations (Grauer et al 2008).…”
