In the recent past, much effort has been put into the development of distributed vision systems with smart cameras as key components. Smart cameras combine video sensing, processing and communication within a single embedded device and provide sufficient on-board infrastructure to carry out high-level video analysis tasks. Networks of smart cameras help to overcome some hard problems inherent to singlecamera systems by providing multiple views of a scene.This paper reports on an improved, agent-oriented middleware for embedded smart cameras. Each image processing task is represented by an agent resident on a smart camera within the network. Agents are able to move from one camera to another as needed during run-time. An agent is comprised of the high-level application logic and the image processing algorithm which is executed on the processing unit.The presented middleware is also designed for distributed image processing where two or more cameras can cooperate for a single task. In the paper we discuss the requirements for such an agent-oriented middleware capable of supporting distributed image processing. Further, we describe the architecture of our middleware implementation. The evaluation of our current middleware implementation shows significant performance improvements compared to our previous Javabased implementation.

A taxonomy and survey of SCTP research

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a relatively recent general-purpose transport layer protocol for IP networks that has been introduced as a complement to the well-established TCP and UDP transport protocols. Although initially conceived for the transport of PSTN signaling messages over IP networks, the introduction of key features in SCTP, such as multihoming and multistreaming, has spurred considerable research interest surrounding SCTP and its applicability to different networking scenarios. This article aims to provide a detailed survey of one of these new features-multihoming-which, as it is shown, is the subject of evaluation in more than half of all published SCTP-related articles. To this end, the article first summarizes and organizes SCTP-related research conducted so far by developing a four-dimensional taxonomy reflecting the (1) protocol feature examined, (2) application area, (3) network environment, and (4) study approach. Over 430 SCTP-related publications have been analyzed and classified according to the proposed taxonomy. As a result, a clear perspective on this research area in the decade since the first protocol standardization in 2000 is given, covering both current and future research trends. On continuation, a detailed survey of the SCTP multihoming feature is provided, examining possible applications of multihoming, such as robustness, handover support, and loadsharing.

The increasing composition of mobile devices and mobile applications in the Internet requires us to revisit the traditional principles of fixed, host-centric communications, when designing a next-generation architecture. To support this major shift, we define in this paper a set of basic service abstractions that should be afforded by a future Internet that is centered upon the notion of self-certifying globally unique IDs (GUID) for all network principals -hosts, content, services, etc. alike. We followup with a specific set of network service APIs that provide full access to the proposed abstractions, and implement these on Linux and Android hosts that connect to an instantiation of the future Internet architecture proposal -MobilityFirst [5]. Using performance benchmarks and the implementation of representative use cases we show that the API is flexible and can enable efficient and robust versions of present and future applications.
