Seamless roaming and guaranteed communication using a synchronized single-hop multi-gateway 802.15.4e TSCH network

Abstract: Industrial wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are being used to improve the efficiency, productivity and safety of industrial processes. An open standard that is commonly used in such cases is IEEE 802.15.4e. Its TSCH mode employs a time synchronized based MAC scheme together with channel hopping to alleviate the impact of channel fading. Until now, most of the industrial WSNs have been designed to only support static nodes and are not able to deal with mobility. In this paper, we show how a single-hop, multi-gat… Show more

“…Finally, mobility in TSCH networks is a difficult topic that has not yet been heavily studied, with only a few results available to date. Jetmir Haxhibeqiri et al [45] proposed use of an Ethernet backbone network and single-hop IEEE 802.15.4 links. Atis Elsts et al designed Instant [46], a TSCH scheduling approach supporting mobile nodes.…”

“…Haxhibeqiri et al [18] focus on the handover process by employing a singlehop network with multiple gateway nodes and a centralized manager. Once a mobile node reserves dedicated cells to one gateway, the network manager instructs the others gateways to install the same cell for that node.…”

“…Today, most research on handover capabilities in low-power IoT networks has been limited to other wireless technologies than BLE. For example, the work in [13] describes how this can be achieved for IEEE 802.15.4e TSCH networks. Existing research on BLE handover provides insight on how to transfer the state of the connection during the handover process between gateways [14].…”
