Search for a Dark Matter-Induced Annual Modulation Signal in NaI(Tl) with the COSINE-100 Experiment

Abstract: We present new constraints on the dark matter-induced annual modulation signal using 1.7 years of COSINE-100 data with a total exposure of 97.7 kg·years. The COSINE-100 experiment, consisting of 106 kg of NaI(Tl) target material, is designed to carry out a model-independent test of DAMA/LIBRA's claim of WIMP discovery by searching for the same annual modulation signal using the same NaI(Tl) target. The crystal data show a 2.7 cpd/kg/keV background rate on average in the 2-6 keV energy region of interest. Using… Show more

“…These include DM-Ice [167], KIMS [168], SABRE [169], Cosine [170,171] and ANAIS [172,173]. We do not provide a detailed fit to the DAMA/LIBRA data but instead focus our discussion on the general features introduced by the Dark Shards.…”

“…Although there is difficulty in explaining this signal with galactic DM while remaining consistent with other experiments, the signal does have many of the properties expected from galactic DM. ANAIS [172,173] and Cosine [170,171] have released first results and do not observe a statistically significant modulation, but they still require a few years of exposure to definitively test the DAMA/LIBRA result.…”

“…An analysis of the first 59.5 live days using about 61 kg effective mass allowed the COSINE collaboration to exclude the 3σ DAMA/LIBRA region at 90% C.L. in a model dependent way [10], and the annual modulation analysis of 1.7 years, with a total exposure of 97.7 kg×y, recently published is compatible at 1σ both with DAMA/LIBRA signal and with the absence of modulation [16].…”

“…From the first 59.5 days of data they have excluded DAMA/LIBRA signal as due to Spin-Independent (SI) WIMPs with a standard halo model [17]. The first annual modulation analysis corresponding to 1.7 years of data has been presented [18]; total exposure analyzed is 97.79 kg·y as three large crystals were excluded due to low light yield and excessive PMT noise. The best fit modulation amplitude derived for the 2-6 keV ee region is S m = (0.0083 ± 0.0068) cpd/kg/keV.…”
