Search for a diffuse flux of high-energy extraterrestrial neutrinos with the NT200 neutrino telescope

Abstract: We present the results of a search for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos with the Baikal underwater Cherenkov detector NT200, based on data taken in 1998 -2003. Upper limits on the diffuse fluxes of ν e + ν µ + ν τ , predicted by several models of AGN-like neutrino sources, are derived. For an E −2 behavior of the neutrino Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 2 March 2018 spectrum, our limit is E 2 Φ ν (E) < 8.1 × 10 −7 cm −2 s −1 sr −1 GeV over an neutrino energy range 2 × 10 4 ÷ 5 × 10 7 GeV. The uppe… Show more

“…These results demonstrate the importance of the cascade mode of neutrino detection with neutrino telescopes. The Baikal Collaboration has a long-term experience to search for a diffuse neutrino flux with the NT200 array using the cascade mode [7,8]. Baikal-GVD has the potential to record astrophysical neutrinos with flux values measured by IceCube [9] even at early phases of construction.…”

“…The Baikal collaboration has performed several searches for diffuse fluxes of cosmic neutrinos [10][11][12]. They looked for cascades produced both in charged and neutral current interactions of neutrinos in the medium surrounding the detector.…”

“…After several stages of growing complexity [3,6], in 1998 a first full-scale neutrino telescope NT200 [7,8] was put into operation in Lake Baikal. It is installed at a depth of 1.1 km, 3.6 km from shore, and consists of 192 photomultipliers which are housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres arranged on eight vertical strings.…”
