Search for Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decays of the Top Quark inpp¯Collisions ats

Abstract: We search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays of the top quark t --> q gamma and t --> qZ (here q represents the c and u quarks) in (p) over bar p collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV. We use a dataset (integral L dt similar to 110 pb(-1)) collected during the 1992-1995 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set 95% confidence level limits on the branching fractions B(t --> q gamma) < 3.2% and B(t --> qZ) < 33%, consistent with the standard model

“…It is usually expected that new physics, and in particular the mass generation mechanism, will show up first in the third family and thus in the top quark, and large hadron colliders are the best place to perform a precise measurement of these couplings. The present 95% C. L. limits on the top branching ratios at Tevatron are Br(t → Zq) ≤ 0.33, Br(t → γq) ≤ 0.032 [3], Br(t → gq) ≤ 0.15 [6], which imply…”

“…A detailed discussion of all these decay channels at LHC will be presented elsewhere [2]. Throughout this Letter we consider that the top quark decays predominantly into W b [3], and we sum t andt production.…”

“…Thus searching for top quark FCNC is a potentially powerful probe of new physics. The CDF and DØ collaborations have reported interesting bounds on the FCNC top quark decays [334][335][336]. The SM expectations for such top quark FCNC processes are far below the detectable level but the MSSM can enhance them by several orders of magnitude to make them potentially accessible at future collider experiments [337][338][339].…”

“…4The current 95 % CL observed limits on the a BR vs BR and b BR vs BR planes are shown. The full lines represent the results from the ATLAS [25], CDF [16, 21] CMS [19, 27], DØ [17], H1 [20], LEP (combined results of the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL collaborations) [10–14] and ZEUS [15] collaborations. The ATLAS lines correspond to the limit on BR() set in this paper…”
