The ultimate goal of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion reactions with neutron-rich, stable and/or radioactive nuclei is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, particularly the isospin-dependent term in the equation of state, i.e., the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade, and significant progress has been achieved both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, a number of phenomena or observables have been identified as sensitive probes to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental studies have confirmed some of these interesting isospin-dependent effects and allowed us to constrain relatively stringently the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities. The impacts of this constrained density dependence of the symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars have also been studied, and they were found to be very useful for the astrophysical community. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, the study of isospin physics is expected to remain one of the forefront research areas in nuclear physics. New data on quasifree polarized neutron-proton scattering, in the region of the recently observed d * resonance structure, have been obtained by exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements with WASA at COSY. This paper details the determination of the beam polarization, 2 checks of the quasifree character of the scattering process, on all obtained Ay angular distributions and on the new partial-wave analysis, which includes the new data producing a resonance pole in the 3 D3-3 G3 coupled partial waves at (2380±10−i40±5) MeV -in accordance with the d * dibaryon resonance hypothesis. The effect of the new partial-wave solution on the description of total and differential cross section data as well as specific combinations of spin-correlation and spin-transfer observables available from COSY-ANKE measurements at T d = 2.27 GeV is discussed.

The one solitary boson exchange potential (OSBEP) is used to evaluate observables of NN elastic scattering below pion threshold. In this approach, we use a nonlinear model of self-interacting mesons as a substitution for the commonly used phenomenological form factors. NN data support an empirical scaling law between the pion and other meson fields, which suggests a link to QCD and significantly reduces the number of parameters in the boson exchange potential. The analysis of np and pp observables distinguishes the model by its fit and few adjustable parameters. An outlook to apply OSBEP in πN systems is given.
