Search for short-lived particles produced in an electron beam dump

Abstract: A search for short-lived neutral particles which decay to electron-positron pairs has been carried out using a beam of 275-GeV electrons incident on an instrumented tungsten beam dump. The experiment was sensitive to particles up to 10 MeV/c 2 in mass and down to 4x 10" l6 sec in lifetime.

“…Current bounds already exist for a range of m φ and photon-φ mixing from Υ(3S) decay at BaBar [63], measurements of e and µ anomalous magnetic moments [64], the beam dump experiments at SLAC [65,66] and Fermilab [67], and dark photon searches at the Tevatron [68]. However, these experiments, while probing the same mass range as Eq.…”

“…From [14] one finds that F 100 GeV is allowed which corresponds, with Constraints from the additional electron beam dump experiments SLAC E141 [34] and Fermilab E774 [35] do not apply for M A ∼ 17 MeV.…”

“…This boson should be able to couple with strength ε 2 e to ordinary particles by means of kinetic mixing with the SM hypercharge field [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. A tipical value for the kinetic mixing parameter ε is expected to be of the order 10 −3 [27,28,33,[35][36][37][38] so that observable effects can be induced at e + e − colliders [35,[39][40][41] and fixed target [42][43][44] or beam dump experiments [45][46][47][48][49].…”
