We discuss the sensitivity of the γγ → τ + τ − process in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies on the anomalous magnetic moment of τ lepton (a τ ). We derive the corresponding cross sections considering semi-leptonic decays of both leptons in the fiducial volume of ATLAS and CMS detectors. The expected limits on a τ with the existing Pb+Pb dataset are found to be better by a factor of two comparing to current best experimental limits and can be further improved by another factor of two at High Luminosity LHC. In addition, our results for tau lepton electric dipole moment, d τ , can be competitive with the current best limits that were obtained by the Belle experiment.

We investigate contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory (νSMEFT). We discuss how νSMEFT operators can contribute to a lepton’s magnetic moment at one- and two-loop order. We show that only one operator can account for existing electronic and muonic discrepancies, assuming new physics appears above 1 TeV. In particular, we find that a right-handed charged current in combination with minimal sterile-active mixing can explain the discrepancy for sterile neutrino masses of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (100) GeV while avoiding direct and indirect constraints. We discuss how searches for sterile neutrino production at the (HL-)LHC, measurements of h→μ+μ− and searches for h→e+e−, neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, and improved unitarity tests of the CKM matrix can further probe the relevant parameter space.

We reconsider the issue of the search for a non-zero electric dipole form factor (EDM) d τ (s) using optimal observables in τ + τ − production by e + e − collisions in the center-of-mass energy range from the τ-pair threshold to about √ s ∼ 15 GeV. We discuss the general formalism of optimal observables and apply it to two CP-odd observables that are sensitive to the real and imaginary part of d τ (s), respectively. We compute the expectation values and covariances of these optimal CP observables for τ-pair production at the Υ(4S) resonance with subsequent decays of τ ± into major leptonic or semihadronic modes. For the τ decays to two pions and three charged pions we take the full kinematic information of the hadronic system into account. Assuming that the Belle II experiment at the KEKB accelerator will eventually record and analyze 4.5 × 10 10 τ + τ − events at √ s = 10.58 GeV we find that 1 s.d. sensitivities δRed τ = 5.8 × 10 −20 e cm and δImd τ = 3.2 × 10 −20 e cm can be obtained with events where both τ's decay semihadronically. Furthermore, we analyze the potential magnitude of the τ EDM form factor in the type-II two-Higgs doublet extension and in two scalar leptoquark extensions of the Standard Model, taking into account phenomenological constraints.
