Search for three-nucleon short-range correlations in light nuclei

Abstract: We present new data probing short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei through the measurement of electron scattering off high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. The inclusive 4 He/ 3 He cross section ratio is observed to be both x and Q 2 independent for 1.5 < x < 2, confirming the dominance of two-nucleon short-range correlations. For x > 2, our data support the hypothesis that a previous claim of three-nucleon correlation dominance was an artifact caused by the limited resolution of the measurement. While 3N-SRCs … Show more

“…Measurements of two-nucleon knockout, where both nucleons from the SRC are observed in the final state, showed dominance of np-SRC, which was later confirmed in additional nuclei for A(e, e p) [257] and through inclusive measurements taking advantage of the target isospin structure in 48 Ca/ 40 Ca ratios [258]. Finally, measurements at x > 2 tried to establish the presence of three-nucleon SRCs (3N-SRCs), but low-Q 2 measurements did not observe 3N-SRC dominance [259], and higher-Q 2 data was consistent with 3N-SRC dominance but had extremely limited statistics [254].…”

“…For simplicity we take ground-state matrix elements and a ratio between nucleus with A nucleons to the deuteron. This setup is directly related to the experiments for inclusive cross section ratios [13][14][15][16][17], but we can interpret the details more generally. In Sec.…”
